What photo metadata reveals about you

A photo is never just pixels. Location, timestamp, device — a single shared image can carry more than you would tell a stranger. Here is what rides along, and what to do about it.

핵심 요약

  • Photos carry EXIF metadata: typically the capture time, camera/phone model and settings — and, if location services were on, GPS coordinates.
  • Sharing behavior differs wildly: many messengers strip metadata on send, while mail, cloud drives, and file transfers usually preserve it.
  • iOS lets you remove location when sharing (Options › Location off), and lets you deny the camera location access entirely.
  • Metadata inside an encrypted vault is protected with the file — but a copy you shared earlier keeps whatever it left with.
  • For sensitive material, treat metadata like the photo itself: it is content, not packaging.

What actually rides along in a photo file

Cameras write EXIF metadata into every file: capture timestamp, device make and model, lens and exposure settings, orientation. Phones add GPS coordinates when the camera has location permission. Editing apps may append their own history, and some formats carry embedded previews of earlier, uncropped versions.

None of this shows in the image itself. It shows to any app, service, or person that reads the file — which is what makes it easy to forget and easy to weaponize. The stalking and doxxing cases you read about often start with coordinates inside an innocently shared file.

Where metadata leaks — and where it doesn’t

The channel decides. Many messaging apps re-encode images on send and drop most metadata in the process. Email, AirDrop, cloud-drive shares, and generic uploads usually preserve the original file byte-for-byte. The same photo can be safe in one channel and revealing in another, so the only reliable rule is: strip first, then share.

iOS gives you two controls worth knowing: the share sheet’s Options row lets you turn Location off per share, and Settings can deny the camera location access permanently. Third-party "metadata remover" shortcuts and apps exist, but the built-in controls cover the common case.

What this means for a private photo collection

For photos that stay private, metadata is part of what you are protecting: coordinates of your home, a timeline of your movements, the device that took them. Inside an encrypted vault all of it is ciphertext. The vault cannot help with copies that left before you locked things down — old uploads, old shares, old sync targets keep whatever they got.

A practical audit for sensitive photos: check what carries location (swipe up on the photo), fix the camera permission going forward, move the collection into encrypted storage, and clean originals plus Recently Deleted. From then on, capture directly in the vault and metadata never touches the outside world.

빠른 답변

Do photos really contain my location?

If your camera had location permission when you took them, yes — embedded GPS coordinates precise enough to identify a building. iPhone photo location can be checked by swiping up on a photo; the map shown comes from that embedded data.

Does sending a photo strip the metadata?

It depends entirely on the channel. Several major messengers re-encode images and drop most metadata; email attachments, AirDrop, cloud-drive links and generic file uploads typically send the file as-is, metadata included. If it matters, strip before sending instead of trusting the channel.

How do I share an iPhone photo without location?

In the share sheet, tap Options at the top and switch Location off before sending. To keep location out of photos altogether, deny the Camera app location access in Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services.

Does a vault protect metadata too?

A real vault encrypts the whole file, metadata included — inside, nothing is readable. What no vault can do is recall copies that already left. Metadata hygiene has to happen before sharing; the vault protects what stays.
