Boxes are the default on purpose. Blurred text and faces can sometimes be reconstructed. A solid box removes the information instead of smearing it.

The metadata diff
Everything below is stripped on export. The cleaned copy is a fresh re-encode of the pixels, then checked again with this same parser.
Redactions are baked into the pixels. The covered areas are gone from the file, not layered on top.
Honest limits
Blur is weaker than it looks. Text blurred with a known font, and even faces, can sometimes be reconstructed from the smear. Researchers have repeatedly de-blurred what editors thought was gone. That is why this tool defaults to solid boxes: a black rectangle carries zero leftover signal.
Stripping metadata removes what the file says about itself, not what the photo shows. Street signs, reflections in windows and glasses, name tags, distinctive scars or tattoos stay visible. Look at the picture the way a stranger would before you share it.
And a cleaned copy only helps if it is the one you share. The original, with its metadata and faces intact, is still in your library. If it is sensitive, it deserves an encrypted home.
Two format notes. Transparency: a PNG stays PNG and keeps it, while a transparent WebP exports as JPEG and loses it. Memory: very large images can exhaust browser memory during the re-encode, so if export fails on a huge photo, resize it first.
