Convert HEIC to PNG

Turn an iPhone HEIC photo into a PNG that opens anywhere, with no lossy re-compression at all. It happens in your browser — the photo is never uploaded. One honest warning up front: a PNG of a photograph is usually several times larger than a JPG.

Your images never leave this device, and every file is built in your browser.

Why convert HEIC to PNG?

You reach for PNG when you need a lossless copy — a frame you’re going to edit repeatedly, an image a design tool insists on as PNG, or a screenshot you happened to take in HEIC. PNG re-saves without ever throwing away detail, so editing round-trips don’t degrade it.

For simply sharing an iPhone photo, PNG is the wrong tool: it will balloon the file with no visible benefit. That’s what HEIC→JPG is for.

What you gain

  • Completely lossless — no compression artefacts, ever
  • Opens in every browser, OS and editor
  • Safe to edit and re-save repeatedly without quality drift

What you lose or trade

  • Much larger files than JPG for photos — often 3–10×
  • No smaller than the pixels demand; PNG can’t “compress a photo” the way JPG does

The honest recommendation

A HEIC photo is a photograph, and PNG will be several times larger than JPG with no visible gain — use HEIC→JPG unless you specifically need a lossless copy.

HEIC to PNG: questions

Is HEIC to PNG lossless?

Yes — the decode is exact and PNG stores every pixel without lossy compression, so nothing is thrown away. The only thing lost is small file size: a PNG of a photo is much bigger than the HEIC or a JPG.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?

HEIC uses modern lossy compression tuned for photos; PNG is lossless and stores far more data. For a photograph that difference is large. If size matters and you don’t need lossless, convert to JPG or WebP instead.

Will converting to PNG improve the photo’s quality?

No. The HEIC was already lossy, so its detail is fixed; PNG just preserves exactly what’s there from now on. It can’t add back anything the camera’s compression removed.
