Convert JPG to PNG

Convert a JPG to a PNG right in your browser — useful when a tool demands PNG or you’re about to edit and don’t want to keep re-compressing. One thing to be clear about: this can’t improve a JPG’s quality, only stop it getting worse.

Your images never leave this device, and every file is built in your browser.

Why convert JPG to PNG?

The honest reason to go JPG→PNG is to stop the bleeding. Every time you edit and re-save a JPG it re-compresses and loses a little more. Convert to PNG once and every subsequent save is lossless.

Some software and workflows also simply require PNG — icons, certain design tools, anything needing a transparent layer you’ll add later.

What you gain

  • No further quality loss on re-saves — lossless from here on
  • Accepted where PNG is required
  • A clean base for adding transparency in an editor

What you lose or trade

  • Bigger file — often several times the JPG’s size
  • Cannot recover detail JPEG already discarded; existing artefacts stay

The honest recommendation

Converting JPG→PNG doesn’t un-blur a JPEG — the artefacts are baked in; PNG just prevents new ones and makes the file bigger, so only do it if you’re editing or a tool requires PNG.

JPG to PNG: questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. The JPG’s detail was already lost to compression, and PNG can’t bring it back — it only preserves exactly what’s there now, so no further quality is lost on future saves.

Why is the PNG bigger than the JPG?

JPG is lossy and highly compressed; PNG is lossless and stores much more data. For a photograph the PNG is typically several times larger. If you don’t need lossless, keep the JPG.

When should I actually convert JPG to PNG?

When you’re going to edit and re-save repeatedly (to avoid stacking JPEG loss), or when a tool or platform specifically requires PNG. For sharing a photo as-is, there’s no benefit.
