Convert JPG to WebP

Convert JPG to WebP to squeeze images smaller for the web — usually a good bit smaller than the JPG at the same visible quality. It runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Your images never leave this device, and every file is built in your browser.

Why convert JPG to WebP?

If you run a website, WebP is the easy win: swapping JPGs for WebP typically cuts image weight by a quarter to a third with no visible change, so pages load faster and cost less bandwidth.

Two caveats. WebP isn’t universally supported by older software, so it’s a web format, not a “send it to anyone” format. And re-encoding a JPG is lossy-on-lossy — a small extra quality cost on top of what the JPG already lost.

What you gain

  • Typically 25–35% smaller than the JPG at the same quality
  • Faster web pages, less bandwidth
  • Keeps a quality slider so you control the trade-off

What you lose or trade

  • Re-encoding a JPG loses a little more quality (lossy on lossy)
  • Not for recipients on older apps/email clients that mishandle WebP

The honest recommendation

Great for your own website; if you’re sending the file to a person, keep the JPG — and remember re-encoding adds a little loss on top of what the JPG already discarded.

JPG to WebP: questions

How much smaller is WebP than JPG?

Usually 25–35% at the same visible quality, though it varies by image. Our format advisor measures the exact saving on your specific file so you’re not guessing.

Does re-encoding a JPG to WebP lose quality?

A little. The JPG is already lossy, and WebP re-compresses it, so some extra detail goes. At high quality it’s hard to see, but it’s not free — keep the original JPG if you might need it.

Should I send WebP files to people?

For your own website, yes. For sending to someone, JPG is safer — a few older apps and email clients still render WebP poorly.
