Notes on this comparison

We compare published features, not independently tested security. A red cross earns no credit: the feature is unsupported, has a drawback, or is labelled “Not advertised” because we found no claim in the checked sources. “Not advertised” does not prove a feature is absent. An amber dash means documented partial support. A grey question mark is reserved for checks we could not assess and is excluded from the ranking score.

Cryptomator or Sealby: which should I use?

Sealby brings a photo gallery, rich-text notes and private files into one vault. Cryptomator encrypts folders in a cloud drive or local storage you already use.

What Cryptomator is built for

  • Open-source clients and a documented vault format
  • No account; works with iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, WebDAV, S3 or local storage
  • Same vault format on every major platform
  • A file-system workflow for large collections and desktop use

What to consider

  • No photo gallery, notes or search inside the app; it works as a file system
  • A vault is a visible folder that announces itself as a vault
  • No decoy, hidden-vault or duress features
  • Desktop use is free for individuals. On iOS, reading is free and write access is a one-time in-app purchase. Cloud storage is separate, and licences do not transfer between platforms.
  • File counts, sizes and timestamps stay visible in the cloud, as its own documentation states

The honest verdict

Choose Sealby for a private media-and-notes app. Choose Cryptomator when you want an encryption layer for existing folders and cloud storage.
